This program is a great, non-contact introduction to team sports, emphasizing fun and constant action without the safety concerns of tackle. Every child is guaranteed playing time in every match, ensuring no one is ever stuck on the bench. Beyond the action, we build core values like teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect—essential life skills that translate far beyond the field.
This is contact rugby as played at the Olympics. Athletes transition to mastering the authentic game, developing high-level rugby IQ and strategic decision-making. Beyond technique, we build a powerful culture of camaraderie, confidence, and sisterhood essential for success in this demanding sport. The program provides pathways to college recruitment, training players to embody the character and discipline required to be the next great stars, just like those seen in the Olympics.
Building on flag skills, this program is the transition to the authentic game, teaching boys the technical discipline and strategic mastery required for real rugby. Beyond the physical challenge, we instill core rugby values of respect, discipline, and leadership. Our competitive program provides a genuine pathway to college recruitment, giving dedicated athletes the exposure and skills needed to continue their rugby careers at the next level.

Fall rugby focuses on developing skills and building fitness. We train on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings.
But it's also about fun - the ever popular Run For Your Lives Jamboree is November 2nd at the Rice Complex. Wear your favorite costume and play touch rugby.
The season wraps up just before Thanksgiving
We'll be back to training for the spring/summer season in March/April.
Spring is HS XVs, against teams in RI and NH, and 7s for all other age groups at smaller tournaments.
In the summer we enter in to the full 7s season for all age groups culminating in the Bay State Games at the end of July.
Early 2013 and prior:
Our rugby program began with coach "Chip" Walker, a true advocate of our sport. Chip wanted to introduce the sport to his 10 year old son and began taking him to matches in Roxbury.
Eventually Chip brought the sport closer to home and started coaching an informal gathering of kids at the Cracker Barrel Fairgrounds in Wrentham. The King Philip Black Caps were born!
Chip was keen on teaching the laws of rugby to our young players, along with the core values of safety, fun, teamwork and respect.
2013 - 2016
By Fall 2013 we'd grown from a fun, pick up group of 5 ex-rugger dads and their children, to a club.
We joined Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization, and changed our name to the Wrentham Acorns.
Chip, a native of Sevenoaks in England, took the name from that club, where the adult teams were the Oaks, and the youngest were the Acorns.
2017 and on:
Chip and family move to Austin, TX in 2015, and Stephen Signes took over leading the club into new territories
As players grew with the club, so did the age groups we competed in. By 2017 we were playing full contact rugby and by 2018 we had a high school team. We weren't Acorns any more.
Following in the tradition of choosing a traditional English rugby club name, we became the Barbarians, and have never looked back
